AC ST. LOUIS LOOK FOR REVENGE AGAINST MINNESOTA

ST. LOUIS, MO (July 30, 2010) – AC St. Louis, playing in the USSF Division 2 Pro League, will face the NSC Minnesota Stars in the second game of a five-game home stand on Sunday afternoon, August 1, at 5:00 p.m. CT. The match can be viewed via live streaming at www.ac-stlouis.com.

AC St. Louis will be looking to avenge their two previous results against Minnesota in league play, the teams have met three times overall with each game being played in Minnesota. The clubs first met on May 29 in a match that AC St. Louis led 1-0 and 2-1 before eventually falling in the closing minutes of the game. The 3-2 loss in Minnesota that day marked a turning point in the season. Since that loss AC St. Louis has posted a record of 5-4-3 in all competitions.

AC St. Louis did beat Minnesota 1-0 in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 22, but the next match against the Stars marked a near repeat of the first. Up 2-0 late in the game on July 14 AC St. Louis once again had Minnesota rally to take points from them as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

For AC St. Louis Sunday afternoon’s match represents their first opportunity of the year to pull into a mid-table standing. Currently on 19 points, and chasing several teams sitting on 23 points and in a potential post-season spot, a win could bring the club to the doorstep of the playoffs. AC St. Louis sit perfectly positioned to keep climbing up the standings with six of their next seven matches coming at home after Sunday.

For the first time this year AC St. Louis will have a chance to win three league games in a row. They have previously won three on the trot back in June with wins over Puerto Rico and then Des Moines and Minnesota in the U.S. Open Cup.

The timing of meeting Minnesota on Sunday could be near perfect for AC St. Louis. The Stars make their first visit to St. Louis having lost just once in their last five games, but in that same span they have won just once. A record of 1-1-3 shows a Minnesota team that is taking points, but not putting teams away. AC St. Louis on the other hand is coming off a clinical 3-0 demolition of the Portland Timbers. St. Louis is 2-2-1 over their last five games, which also includes two shutouts.

The key for St. Louis will be to keep their scoring touch going. Mike Ambersley upped his season total to six (eight in all competitions) with a hat trick against Portland. Jeff Cosgriff and a hopefully returning Chris Salvaggione have found the back of the net frequently during the last two weeks. Plus, the club will see more minutes, perhaps even a start, from on-loan midfielder Collen Warner of Real Salt Lake. Warner’s Real Salt Lake teammate and defender Chris Schuler will also be expected to make his last start of a short four-game loan spell.

AC St. Louis will also host a game prior to the 5:00 kick-off. The “Unsung Heroes Classic” between local area police officers and firefighters will get underway at 2:45. Gates to The Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park will open at 2:15. The Unsung Heroes Organization benefits the Backstoppers, and AC St. Louis will contribute $1 dollar from each walk-up ticket sold to the Unsung Heroes.

AC St. Louis next home match will be Friday, August 6 at 7:10 p.m. against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Tickets are still available and can be obtained by calling 1-888-STL-GOAL, or by visiting www.ac-stlouis.com.
