AC St. Louis Win In Puerto Rico

ST. LOUIS, MO (June 12, 2010) AC St. Louis earned their first ever road win on Saturday night in Puerto Rico by defeating the Islanders 1-0 in a USSF Division 2 Professional Soccer League match. The win improves St. Louis’ record to 2-7-1 on the year.

St. Louis defended a 1-0 lead for most of the second half, and goalkeeper Alec Dufty made two crucial stops in the final 45 minutes to keep his club in front. St. Louis played counter attack soccer most of the night, and their organized defending and timely goalkeeping paid off in the end.

AC St. Louis held off Puerto Rico throughout the first half as the Islanders held the possession advantage. Puerto Rico generated a few good chances throughout the opening 30 minutes, but weren’t able to put anything on frame until the 33rd minute. Alec Dufty responded well the first time he was tested with a shot on goal by quickly leaving his line to smother a direct chance from near the penalty spot. Dufty charged the attacking player and cut down all angles to smother the shot, which came from a fine combination of passed by Puerto Rico.

Dufty’s save seemed to have turned the momentum for St. Louis who quickly went on the attack to generate their first great chance. AC St. Louis swept forward from midfield, finding Luke Kreamalmeyer unmarked in the left side of the penalty area.
Kreamalmeyer’s shot was well save as the St. Louis winger took aim at the top corner.

Three minutes later St. Louis would find the goal they were looking far as Mike Ambersley found himself with space and time on the left side of the Puerto Rico penalty area. The keeper deflected Ambersley’s resulting attempt on goal, but the rebound allowed set up for forward Brad Stisser who slammed it home for his first goal of the year. AC St. Louis carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The team will have a quick turnaround following Saturday’s game. AC St. Louis returns to St. Louis on Sunday and will depart on Monday for Des Moines, Iowa. AC St. Louis will play the Des Moines Menace in the first-round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night, June 15.
